Penang Bridge International Marathon 2011 (21km)

This will be my final race just before the coming SCMS 2011, in fact on Saturday night I was feeling so sleepy and restless that I started to wonder why did I signed up for a race that kickoff at 3am when earlier this year I hesitated whether should I run a night race in Sundown Marathon that will end just after midnight? I was just not in the right mood or right frame of mind and so just hours before the race starts my thoughts were just to complete the race, anyway since my priority will be to do well for SCMS.

There it goes as the race starts at 3am and due to the heavy human traffic I completed my first 1km at a slow 4:48min/km pace. But I subsequently managed to up my pace to around 4:38min/km from 2 to 4km before I rounded up the first 5km in 23:25min with an average pace of 4:41min/km. I was feeling a bit tired guess I still have not strike form!

As I tried to keep close to 4:45min/km pace, I was slowing down from 6 – 7km with a pace of 4:48min/km, think it was also partly due to the slight inclined of the Penang Bridge that requires slightly more effort to run. With a slight adjustment I complete 8km in 4:43min/km but again slowing down to 4:49min/km at the 9km mark where it soon came the u-turn point at the middle of the bridge, perhaps dun to the slight decline route and also feeling great and excited I unknowingly ran faster and rounded up 10km with a fast 4:30min/km pace. With that I took 23:18min for my second 5km split.

I was enjoying my run and while at the same time keep reminding myself to keep check on my pace as I was only halfway through. From 11km to 12km I was slowing down from 4:40min/km to 4:44min/km before a decline route brings me back to 4:27min/km pace. I finally ended my next 2km with irregular pace of 4:38min/km and 4:33min/km. I was running faster for the third 5km split in 23:02min which on average with a 4:36min/km pace.

With that it marks the end of running on Penang Bridge and with last 6km to go I was cautious not to over pace, since I was almost there with just one quarter of the race to go I gradually slow down but tried to maintain just between 4:40min/km to 4:45min/km before going all out again at the 20km mark as I aim to finish the race strong.

It was a surprise PB for me as I grew stronger for the second half of the race and with that I got a nice negative split. So glad I that finally go under 100mins for a half marathon as disappointingly the distances for Real run and AHM were inaccurate! It was a great boost before my ultimate target in 2 weeks time! Hopefully I can do well in SCMS and go below 3hr 45mins and this will be my third attempt at sub 4hrs.
